Giving Tuesday Ghana Launches a 30 Day Social Media Campaign with a Call to Promote Local Philanthropy

Giving Tuesday Ghana has launched a 30-day social media campaign to promote local philanthropy. The launch saw key actors advance perspectives on local philanthropy, generosity.
Giving Tuesday is a global generosity movement that continues to unleash the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world. The movement has rapidly spread across the globe including, Ghana, Lebanon, the United Kingdom, Nigeria, Kenya, among other countries.
Giving Tuesday is observed annually by dedicating 30th November each year to mark and encourage people to give to charity, communities, and organizations for social impact initiatives.
Over the years, Giving Tuesday Ghana has caved a notch for itself emphasizing and reinforcing opportunities to give back to communities and causes in safe ways that allow for social connection and kindness even while trying to mitigate the impact of the pandemic.
On Tuesday, 30th November 2021, the Giving Tuesday-Ghana Co-hosts, members and partners including, the CSOs Platform on SDGs and Philanthropy Ghana, joined efforts with the Giving for Change implementing partners in Ghana, i.e. the West Africa Civil Society Institute (WACSI), Star Ghana Foundation to launch a month of local philanthropy campaign through social media.
During the 30-day social media campaign launch held on zoom, Emmanuel Marfo, Country Director of Giving Tuesday Ghana, made a carrion call on all to put their shoulders to the wheel, particularly as the movement seeks to promote local philanthropy.
Whiles addressing the attendees, Kate Sheridan, Global lead for Giving Tuesday, encouraged all to be charitable by donating their time, talents, and resources to increase awareness of individual donors and emerging philanthropists on the potential of giving back to society.
According to Nancy Kankam-Kusi, a representative from WACSI, ‘’the focus of this campaign is to promote philanthropy or generosity on how to scale up giving beyond civil society organizations and how we can expand the concept of giving beyond monetary terms but also include issues such as voluntary works, advocacy aspect, social enterprise and investing’’
Speaking to the communication plan for the campaign, Frank Amoateng, a representative from Star Ghana Foundation commended the communication team of the Giving Tuesday for demystifying the approach to fit the local context and audience. He particularly lauded the team for including the ‘adinkra symbols’ in driving the campaign. In his view, the campaign will help build a stronger virtual community since the world is moving towards virtual giving and fundraising.
Finally, Kobina Adomadzi Longdon, GT – Ghana Communication lead partner, charged all partner organizations to stick to the communication plan and insist on the use of all the various hashtags to ensure signage in pushing the campaign to achieve it intended purpose of promoting philanthropy in Ghana.
