At Barcamps, you get the opportunity to meet new people to share ideas, create friendships and possibly business partners. On a personal level, I have been able to learn the importance of seeing things from others’ perspectives due to the diversity in topics of discussions”. This is what Daniel Sarpong shared when asked about his experiences from Barcamps in Ghana. Barcamp Kumasi 2024 is on Saturday, 9th November 2024 at Presbyterian Guest House Conference Room – Adum, in Kumasi. This is organized by the GhanaThink Foundation – a day of networking, learning, sharing, and mentoring. The theme is Culture | Finance| Quality.

The first Barcamp in Ghana was in December 2008 in Accra. Nana Kwabena Owusu was a participant at this groundbreaking unconference that brought together some of the best Ghanaian youth in Ghana and abroad. He was keen to bring the Barcamps to Kumasi and successfully led the organization of the first Barcamp Kumasi in 2010 at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Engineering Department in Kumasi, Ghana. It was themed “Collaboration: The key for opportunity and development”. These networking forums in the city affectionately called Oseikrom have impacted thousands of youth, while building a network of changemakers, doers and entrepreneurs.

Ato Ulzen-Appiah is the Director of the GhanaThink Foundationand he has been instrumental in the growth of the Barcamp Ghana since its inception in 2008. “I grew up in Kumasi and it is great to see how the Garden City has grown over the years, especially around youth empowerment. When we were thinking about a regular networking event, in between the annual Barcamps, we decided to pick Kumasi first. Kumasi needed to have a lot more events that brought great people, products and places together. We started the whole Konnect initiative in Kumasi – Kumasi Konnect. As at November  2024, there were Konnect groups in 31 cities/towns in Ghana”.

GhanaThink Foundation is an organization based both in Ghana and the USA, which has successfully organized 120+ BarCamps in Ghana. BarCamp Kumasi 2024 will be the 12th of its kind and it will showcase entrepreneurs and innovators in the Ashanti region. Barcamps in Ghana feature mentoring by professionals or entrepreneurs as well as networking with like-minded individuals. There are lots of great group discussions through breakout sessions as well. For this 2024 edition, it would also feature personality interviews, borrowing from the innovative Konnect Kouch birthed through GhanaThink’s Konnect Whatsapp Groups.

The confirmed mentors for Barcamp Kumasi 2024 include Naomi Boakyewaa Kokuro, Dr.(Med) Johnson Kyeremeh, Ebenezer Kuuku Andrews, Efua Apprey, Angela Ansah, Cletus Boateng, Evelyn Deladem Ansi, Kwame Ababio, Pearl Bampoe Minkah, Jerome Arthur, Emmanuella Serwaa Gyawu, Kennedy Baah, Gifty Impraim, Steven Kyei, Philip Dong-Wie, Leticia Ama Asiedu, David Eshun, Gwendolyn Masley, Maurice Makafui, Paul Atta Oppong, Elike Kattah, Osei Yeboah Asuamah, Ellen Abena Assor, Nana Abena Boatemaa, Abdul Malik Busumuru Adams, Afua Kobi Ampem Genfi, etc.

These events have delivered as a tool for shaping and nurturing the mindset of the youth who are eager to make an impact due to the mentor-mentee and participant-participant engagements nature of the programme”.
